Artists I admire

Some of my favorite artists are Andrew and Jamie Wyeth for their love of land and countryside and their rural ethic combined with a muted, expressive feel. I especially like the spirit and execution in Jamie’s portrait of Kennedy. I like Richard Diebencorn for unusual reasons; his work is abstract but full of color, with a Californian spirit that’s different from my own experience. I admire the portraits of Anders Zorn, a 19th century Swedish artist, especially his oil paintings. Other favorites include Fairfield Porter with his scenes from domestic life and the natural world and Janet Fish for her complex still lifes and objects. I also really enjoy many of the contemporary artists whose work I’ve found online, particularly Duane Keiser’s “a painting a day” series.

Artist and teacher Lou Petersen has been an inspiration throughout my artistic life. The fun, vibrancy and sense of play in her choice of materials contrasted with the technical difficulty of egg tempera in my early iconography phase. This led me to Western art, as I wanted to be able to recapture a feeling of enjoyment and play in art and to express my creative side as well as the technical skills.
